Tim Frank (left), historian, Arlington National Cemetery; Rod Gainer (center), curator, Arlington National Cemetery; and Bill Painter (left), project manager / exhibit designer, Capital Services; measure the Chief Plenty Coups flag in the Memorial Amphitheater Lower Chapel at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, March 13, 2020. The flag was a gift to the Unknown from Chief Plenty Coups of the Crown Nation and was originally made by the US Army and given to Chief Plenty Coups for his nation’s service as Scouts during the Plains’ Indian Wars. It is one of the first documented gifts to the Unknown. The flag was being measured so that a special archival case could be made for it that would then allow for it to be displayed near the other Plenty Coups items in the Memorial Amphitheater Display Room.
