 Madeleine Jaffray volunteered with the French Flag Nursing Corps, Red Cross in 1915 and served in French field hospitals during the World War I. In 1917, she was wounded while stationed at Adinkerke, Belgium during German bombardment, resulting in the amputation of her leg. In recognition of her service, she became the first Canadian woman to be awarded the French Croix de Guerre. From the Madeleine Morrison fonds, PR1986.0054/4.
