He thengraduated from the European Institute of Business Administration (INSEAD) in Fontainebleau, France, with a Master's in Business Administration.<br /> <br /> In 1984, Mr. Desmarais was appointed Vice-President of Power Financial Corporation, a company which he helped establish. He was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer of that company in 1986 and, in 1990, became the Chairman of the Board. In 1991, he was appointed Vice-Chairman of Power Corporation of Canada. The company Parfinance (Paris, France) appointed him Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in 1993. Parfinance was dissolved in 1998. In 1996, Mr. Desmarais became Chairman and Co-Chief Executive Officer of Power Corporation of Canada.<br /> <br /> Mr. Paul Desmarais is a member of the Board of Directors and of the Executive Committee of several companies. In Canada: Power Corporation of Canada, Power Financial Corporation, Investors Group Inc., The Great-West Life Assurance Company, Great-West Lifeco Inc., London Insurance Group Inc. and London Life Insurance Company; in the United States: Great-West Life & Annuity Insurance Company; in Europe: Pargesa Holding S.A. (Switzerland) and Groupe Bruxelles Lambert S.A. (Belgium). He is a member of the Board of Directors of Gesca Ltd, Les Journaux Trans-Canada (1996) Inc. and La Presse Ltd in Canada; Suez and TotalFinaElf in France.
