Gordon Atkinson
Gordon Atkinson in parade uniform, October 1996. Long-time broadcaster and politician Gordon Atkinson has died at the age of 83 in January 2006. Atkinson was born in Winnipeg on Aug. 24, 1922. He fought in both the Second World War and in the Korean War. He became a radio announcer in Calgary in 1937. He worked in radio, television, cinema and theatre between 1946 and 1950. Atkinson worked at the CBC in Toronto in 1952, and then moved to Montreal in 1953. He worked at both CBC Radio and CBC Television in Montreal from 1958 to 1981. He then moved to the private radio station CJAD, where he worked until 1989. He then decided to delve into politics, running for the newly created Equality Party and winning the seat of Notre-Dame-de-GrRce in 1989. Atkinson then sat as an independent in the National Assembly from March 29, 1994. He was defeated as an independent candidate in 1994. photo (c) Images Distribution
