Richler
1990 File photo of Mordecai Richler, one of Canada's best-known novelists, essayists and columnists died overnight (july 3rd 2001) at the age of 70 from kidney cancer. Mr. Richler published 10 novels, including The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, Joshua Then and Now, Solomon Gursky was Here and Barney's Version, which won the $25,000 Giller Prize for fiction in 1998. Some of the literary trophies he's taken home include two Governor-General's Awards, the Commonwealth Writers Prize, and the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour. His novel Solomon Gursky Was Here was nominated in 1990 for Britain's prestigious Booker Prize. Mr. Richler was also recently appointed to the Order of Canada. He was born in Montreal and has often written on French nationalism which he opposed, many of his columns in the english daily the Montreal Gazette , provoked voilent reactions from the french majority in the Quebec province.
