Mordecai Richler, one of Canada's best-known novelists, essayists and columnists died overnight (july 3rd 2001) at the age of 70 from kidney cancer.<br />
<br />
Mr. Richler published 10 novels, including The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, Joshua Then and Now, Solomon Gursky was Here and Barney's Version, which won the $25,000 Giller Prize for fiction in 1998.<br />
Some of the literary trophies he's taken home include two Governor-General's Awards, the Commonwealth Writers Prize, and the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour. His novel Solomon Gursky Was Here was nominated in 1990 for Britain's prestigious Booker Prize. <br />
Mr. Richler was also recently appointed to the Order of Canada.<br />
He was born in Montreal and has often written on French nationalism which he opposed, many of his columns in the english daily  the Montreal Gazette , provoked voilent reactions from the french majority in the Quebec province.<br />
He is survived by his wife Florence, a former fashion model, and five children including Daniel, Noah, Emma, Martha and Jacob.<br />
