Spain's best known director, Carlos Saura was born in 1932 and was strongly influenced, in his childhood, by his pianist mother and his artist older brother. He studied journalism and cinema before opting for the latter and making his directorial debut in 1958 with the short, Cuenca. The following year he made his first feature film, LOS GOLFOS, and he quickly moved into the vanguard of the new Spanish cinema. His films include: THE HUNT (1965), PEPPERMINT FRAPP… (1967), THE GARDEN OF DELIGHTS (1970), ANNA AND THE WOLVES (1972), COUSIN ANGELICA (1973), RAISE RAVENS (1975), BLINDFOLD (1978), BLOOD WEDDING (1981), CARMEN (1983), THE STILTS (1984), EL AMOR BRUJO (1985), EL DORADO (1987), THE DARK NIGHT (1989), FLAMENCO (1995), PAJARICO (1996), TANGO (1998) and GOYA IN BORDEAUX (1999). Many of these have been shown at the Montreal World Film Festival.
